History

 

 

1974   Myrtis Waller, Elaine's mother, taught us to make soap by a recipe she learned as a young girl in Mississippi.

 
1974 - 1985   The "hobby" period. Intense study, trial and error, and trial again. Many recipes and techniques tried with most being rejected. Entire family played a large role in testing. Skin still largely intact.

 
1985-1992   The refining process. Learned soap chemistry, etc.

 
1992   Equipment and process designed, recipe fine-tuned and established as a trade secret.

 
August 1992   Green Mountain Soap Co. incorporated.

 
1992 - 1993   Equipment purchased for larger batch sizes.

 
1994   Dr. Mario Novakovic, international consultant to the soap industry, engaged to help solve a problem which arose with the soap. Solution found, making the way clear for sales on the open market. Payment made with Elaine's pecan pies.

 
1995   Richard left full-time job with Teledyne Brown Engineering to pursue soap making full time. Elaine prudently held on to her job with NASA.

 
1996   Won bid to appear on QVC, the TV shopping network. Elaine had her six minutes of national fame.

 
1997   Name and logo registered as a US Trademark after a five-year battle with another "Green Mountain" entity and a bunch of Madison Avenue lawyers.

 
1998   Richard and Elaine joined the Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild. Richard has served on its "Panel of Experts" for soap chemistry and its board of directors.

 
2000   Broke ground for new facility.

 
2001   Occupied new production building.

 
2001     "Blessing of the Factory" ceremony held September 29
     
2004     GMSC introduces its new liquid coconut/olive oil soap
     
2007     Production facilities expanded to separate scented from unscented products
     
2012     GMSC introduces true castile liquid soap made from 100% olive oil
   

2013     Shaving soap brought to market after 3 years of R&D
